ART GALLERY OF ONTARIO

MS26-042.5 TRANSPARENT DRAWING

As mentioned on the previous page, I will be at an architecture school conducting a Transparent Drawing workshop today. So I have included this travel related drawing.

When we were in Toronto a few weeks ago, we of course went thru the Art Gallery of Ontario.  This is a Frank Gehry museum.  And it is quite wonderful.  There is the fish like glass galleria over the entry.  There is the great interior ramp at the entry.  There is the building signature twisting interior stair.  The entire building is really fun.

But I was particularly taken by how the top gallery floor worked.  Although it takes awhile to see what is going on, the top floor works as a series of smaller galleries which reach up to a skylight.  These smaller galleries telescope upwards as they reach toward the roof.  And there are varying sizes of skylights in each of the galleries.  So the top floor works more like galleries within galleries.

Plus, on the top floor, there is a south facing glass wall.  And the light is modulated with oversize wood louvers.

So although all we are really talking about are boxes within boxes, the entire effect is fantastic and constantly revealing.  It is such a simple concept.  And it is done to such great effect.
