CASA BATLLO

Is it more authentic if I post drawings during my travels?  Possibly.

We went to Casa Batllo, by Gaudi, here in Barcelona yesterday.  I had been there decades ago.  Yesterday’s visit was like seeing it for the first time.

The center staircase of the house is celebrated, and rightfully so.  What struck me yesterday, was how much of a complete experience the center staircase is.  Yes, there is all of the Gaudi esque forms and shapes on the exterior and interior.  And all of that, by itself, is mind blowing.

But the staircase.  It is washed in natural light.  To perform any vertical circulation in the house, you have go to into the center staircase.  And this entry to the center stair feels cleansing.  It feels refreshing.  The blue tiles modulate the light.  The sizes of the windows increase in size as you descend, to of course let in more natural light on the lower floors.

You feel like you are outside when in the staircase, and this is simply a fantastic experience.  This staircase is like a machine.  To change floors, you use the machine.  It is sheer delight to go up and down the stairs.

In my drawing above, I tried to capture the overlay of the fantastic street facade with the blue machine of the stair.  Of course, there are many items missing in my drawing.  Like, where is the stair?  The stair was too hard to draw on a 5 x 7 piece of paper.

Yet I feel I captured my overall impression of the building, which was that there is this blue machine in the center making it all work, and giving the most delight.

The drawing projection is an elevation perspective.
