GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI TRANSPARENCY

MOREAU KUSUNOKI DRAWING

It seems that my most recent posts have to do with the search for transparency in the architectural drawings of others.

I just happened to be looking at the entries for the Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition. The Guggenheim has posted all of the finalists as well as the winning design here.

And what do you know. In the winning entry there is some transparency in one of their drawings. The drawing shown above, done by Moreau Kusunoki Architects, is more or less an axonometric. And the drawing is very holistic in that it is showing in three dimensions how the entire museum is to work together.

As you can see they elected to make some of the walls transparent. You can see thru all of the roofs.  Each of the forms is completely understandable.  And you get a sense about the exciting things that are happening in each of the forms. Pay particular attention to the two forms at the bottom of the drawing; most of those are transparent.

Although there is no tone on the walls, the sense of looking thru the roofs and the walls is compelling. Is this what ultimately swayed the jury? Who knows.

Nevertheless, it is fun to see Transparent Drawing precepts in action, and indeed carrying the day.
