LATIN AMERICAN MODERNISM 2

MIGUEL RODRIGO MAZURE

Robert, one of our far flung correspondents, reports that while he also thinks that the current Latin American Modernism show at MOMA is excellent, he also had trouble finding transparency in all of the beautiful architectural drawings.

He writes that he also snapped a few photos of drawings that he thought had some transparency, but somehow he deleted these from his phone.

So in honor of the deleted photos from Robert’s phone, I thought I would post the only other drawing that had at least some of the criteria of a Transparent Drawing.

This was done by Miguel Todrigo Mazure, who was a Peruvian architect. This was titled Project for a hotel, Machu Picchu, Peru. And it was done with a red crayon on paper.

The drawing is three dimensional and it is done by hand. There is a bit of seeing thru the forms. But there are no tones applied. And what I really find amazing is that the artist was compelled to maintain the dictates of representation. That is to say, despite the fact that he was absolutely free to continue drawing behind some of the forms, he didn’t. After all, this was simply a study with a red crayon. It was not even remotely going to become a representational drawing. Yet he could not go beyond the cultural mandates of representation.

That’s not to pick on him. We all hold back like this. I used to. But now I find it the most natural thing in the world to draw thru the forms.

Anyway, it’s great to see another transparent drawer roaming the international architectural shows looking for something, anything, transparent.

And Robert also reports that above all, he is really mad that Barragan was slighted in this show.
