TRANSPARENT IN POPULAR MEDIA

MS02-001 TRANSPARENT DRAWING

Only when you buy a car do you then see all the other cars on the road like yours. I am having this same experience since I started Transparent Drawing. Now I find examples all the time of the use of the word transparent in the media.

Business Name

There is a website titled transparent business. Their tag line is thus:

“We make managing your remote workforce more productive, with 100% accountability. Now you can collaborate with your team of connected professionals, no matter where they live and work.”

Via the use of their applications, you are able to monitor everyone’s performance, justify every billable minute, increase communication, etc. The idea here, of course, is that transparency eliminates the unseen thereby improving the end result. Sounds familiar.

TV Series

Then of course there is the Amazon television show, Transparent. I have not seen it only because I am very cheap when it comes to paying for TV media. The show, as I am sure you know, revolves around the effects one family’s handling of a transgender member. The use of the word transparent, though, is a signifier for eliminating the unseen, stasis, acceptance, etc.

Corporate Cheating

In the current Volkswagen diesel emissions cheating scandal (how could VW really be this stupid?), the use of the word transparent and transparency (as in we will transparently reveal what happened, etc.) has been used by VW in many articles. This is after their deposed CEO stated that they “totally screwed up.”

So there are just three examples of the use of the word transparent that immediately come to mind. Like I said, I see the use of this work everywhere now. I’m sure that the word transparent was being used with equal ubiquity for a long time before this.
