YOU’VE GOT TO START SOMEWHERE

De KooningPicasso said, that when drawing,

“You have to start somewhere.  You can always erase reality later on.”

That is a powerful thought, given that it applies to our continued search for the means and methods of form generation.  We have mentioned before how it is sad that the paintings of modernist masters are not taught to be used as the genesis for form generation.  For all we know, the buildings that we consider masterpieces somehow materialized out of the firmament and landed on the earth as one holistic construct.

Yet we know they didn’t.  There was a design process behind each of them.  And this process should be part of what we are taught.

DE KOONINGI’m really having too much fun in the drawing above, if that is possible.  I continue to be inspired by the composition, the lines and the colors of De Kooning.  The work to the left is titled Untitled XIV, 1976.

Another page which uses De Kooning as the place to start form generation is The Trajectory of Art.

The closer that I look at his work, the more that I am amazed by the balanced flow of all of his compositions.

This was my starting place.  And I ended up erasing the reality of where I started.
