A BUILDING TO SOOTHE

It’s been tough, I know.  Two pages ago, there was a mind numbing 2000 year argument over natural forms.  Then there was the saran wrap page.  Saran wrap?  Seriously?

So I thought I better drop in a building.  Buildings, in these pages, are tonic.  They get us back to our core mission.  There is comfort.  Plus, as we have said earlier, there are building junkies following these pages.  To touch base, I offer to you, yet another Villa Savoye.  We already have a page, titled The Mathematical Villa Savoyes

The Source Images were a gun emplacement photo that I took on Whidbey Island, and a water holder photo that I took in Japan.  The geometric similarity in the photos is the centered composition.  After drawing one over the other as a Form Combine, the opportunity for the concentric curved bands just presented itself.  I masked out the concentric bands, and then applied gold metallic spray paint.

What struck me, though, was that the geometrically curved center triggered an association to Villa Savoye.  VS has an identically curved form at the ground level, which serves as car parking, ramp termination, etc.  So I just blacked out one end, and then depicted the building.  Column locations are congruent with the concentric bands.  It works together.  There is holistic unity of form.

I never know how a drawing is going to turn out.  And that’s because I almost never draw the same way twice.  Draw something once, why draw it again?  Because of this, I get many associations that I would not have thought possible.  Is Villa Savoye relational to a Greek stadium?  What if the area under a building were developed geometrically?  Could a building be just about as depicted on the drawing?

Because these questions deal with holistic, resolved form, I expand my imagination with Transparent Drawing.  For me, drawing like this is pure freedom.  Yet it is a freedom within a loose geometrical framework.

At any rate, while I know it’s been tough, I hope that this page serves as a salve for our bruised minds.
