LET’S ELIMINATE 2D DRAWINGS

MS07-053 TRANSPARENT DRAWINGWhen we draw transparently, we by default are drawing in three dimensions. A two dimensional drawing does not exist in the transparent drawing worldview.  Because we are drawing our enclosures and forms so as to address closure and completeness, a two dimensional drawing does not permit transparent understanding.

Does this mean that we can no longer draw floor plans? Of course not. The plan remains a primary visual manipulator, just as it has for centuries. When you are drawing a floor plan, you are simply not drawing transparently.  Which means you are doing less work.

However, the floor plan can then become the form generator for your transparent drawing. We have discussed the projection of two dimensional plan elements so as to spring a form into being.

Quite simply, we need to be aware when we draw two dimensionally. Although two dimensional drawing is necessary, we need to be aware of the very limited work that this drawing will do. And I believe that we need to limit our use of the 2D drawing.

Given the 2D drawing cultural reinforcement, this can be difficult. It is quite easy to simply default to a two dimensional mindset. Page after page of Ching, et al, deal in nothing but two dimensional drawings.

You ever notice how the less that a designer knows, the more two dimensional drawings they use?

We simply need to work to reduce, if not eliminate 2D drawings from our tools. The less 2D drawing that we do, the greater our understanding and knowledge. The less 2D drawing that we do, the stronger will be our Visual Facts.

Ingrained cultural precepts are difficult to overcome. Let’s work to eliminate 2D drawings.
